In May 2025 I was engaged by MISCO to give an training on managing conflicts in organisations to the management of Amino Chemicals Malta.

In today's fast-paced and dynamic work environments, organizations are increasingly reliant on highly intelligent and skilled employees to drive innovation and productivity. However, the very attributes that make these individuals exceptional—such as strong opinions, assertiveness, and a high degree of independence—can also lead to interpersonal conflicts and challenges in team cohesion.
1. Reason For Engagement: Navigate Conflict Better
Given the high-stakes environment of pharmaceutical production, unresolved conflicts could lead to decreased productivity and morale. To address this, MISCO engaged me to design and deliver a tailored Conflict Management training session aimed at equipping employees with practical tools to navigate and resolve conflicts constructively.
2. Outcome Sought: Improve Management Team Communication
Amino Chemicals sought to have management training on conflict and communications to enhance their leaders' skills in effectively resolving disputes and fostering clear, constructive dialogue within teams. The primary objectives were to:
Increase awareness of common sources and types of workplace conflict.
Develop effective communication and active listening skills.
Introduce conflict resolution strategies suitable for a pharmaceutical manufacturing context.
Foster a collaborative work environment that minimizes the negative impact of conflicts.
3. Content Design: Conflict Management As A Process & Policy
The training content was customized to reflect the specific challenges faced by Amino Chemicals. Key components included:
Understanding Conflict: Exploring the nature of conflict, its causes, and its impact on team dynamics.
Conflict Resolution Styles: Introducing various approaches such as collaboration, compromise, and avoidance, and discussing their applicability in different scenarios.
Effective Communication: Emphasizing the importance of active listening, empathy, and clear messaging in de-escalating conflicts.
Practical Exercises: Engaging participants in role-plays and case studies relevant to their work environment to practice conflict resolution techniques.
Conflict Management As Policy: having a policy on how people are to navigate conflict can support the organisation more.
4. The Delivery: Onsite Training
The session was conducted as a three 1-hour interactive sessions at Amino Chemicals' premises. The format combined theoretical discussions with practical exercises which facilitated peer learning and reinforced the application of concepts in real-world situations.
5. The Impact: Prioritising Effort
Post-training feedback indicated a positive shift in participants' approach to handling conflicts. Employees reported increased skill in prioritising effort whilst having a better understanding of how to prevent escalation.
6. Lessons Learned: Practical Takeaways for Readers
The training highlighted the importance of context-specific conflict resolution strategies. In a regulated industry like pharmaceuticals, where precision and compliance are critical the following is needed:
Tailoured Approach: highly competent and intelligent people have already been taught how to handle conflict. Hence the focus is on why there is a block in resolution.
It's About Relationships: fostering an environment that encourages open communication is key in a workplace where people are so busy.
Choose battles wisely: A collaborating style of resolving conflict can be an overkill with petty issues and wastes a lot of energy.
7. Conclusion & Call to Action
Training sessions like this are transformative experiences that could shape the way your team collaborates and leads. By investing in conflict management training, you can cultivate stronger leaders, more engaged employees, and a workplace culture that thrives on trust and openness.
